Oppo, meet Nishi, a 2005 Toyota MR2 Roadster. She won’t be registered for another couple of weeks (I first have to finish my finals), so no Oppo review until then, but if there’s anything you’d like to know, ask away!

Nice! The MR-S is quite uncommon in Canada, at least around where I live in Nova Scotia...

Saw one this same color on Thursday at the local Toyota dealership for service when I dropped my Accent off next door at the Hyundai dealership for some work! Fun looking little rides! :)

Not a lot around here either, especially not when compared to MX-5s, so I was quite lucky to come across this one. They’re a lot of fun to drive, and should be economical and reliable as well, as it’s still a Toyota.

For sure! My memory may be fuzzy, but isn’t the engine in the MR-S the one they used in a lot of Loti as well?

Indeed. It’s got the 140hp 1ZZ-FE, which is used in Euro Lotus Elise S. The NA Elise and Euro Elise R use the 190hp 2ZZ-GE from the Celica GT-S.

Congrats.

Any modification plans or keep as is?

Thanks!

The wheels need to be refurbished, so I’m thinking of putting winter tires on those and getting new summer shoes. In the long-term possibly coilovers and a new exhaust manifold (or full exhaust), but I’ll keep it close to stock for a while.
We’re quite limited in what we can do here in Belgium, as we’ve got very strict modification laws.

Nice car Wout! How did you come up with the name for it?

I think this calls for a Oppo Benelux meet, by the way!

My state over here in the US doesn’t seem to have any laws on modifications except for how dark window tint is.

Only 13 of 159 counties test emissions so only those counties restrict modifications that effect emissions output. Before they switched to all computer linked testing most people “knew a guy” who would pass the car for an extra $20. Now that's harder because the computers hook up to the OBDII port and send the info to the state. Makes renewing tags easier since you can do it online instead of going to the office but much harder to cheat for those that want to.

Sounds like gearhead heaven!

We’ve got yearly inspection, which includes engine, emissions, lights, suspension, braking, ...Every non-standard part has to have the correct paperwork and has to be certified after installation. You can do suspension work and get a catback exhaust (which cannot be louder than the OEM one), and that’s about it.

Thanks! My girlfriend gets to choose the names of our cars (her Golf is called George), and since we’re both a fan of Kei Nishikori, Nishi was the result. It apparently also means ‘West’ in Japanese, so all the better.

And I’m in for a Benelux (or even Europpo?) meet, but it’ll probably be hard for me to find some time for it before September.

That’s tough.

It can be good and bad. There are people who modify their cars or keep their cars stock but well maintained. There are a lot of cars that have no business being out on the road either because they're falling apart or poorly modified.

Oh, that’s a great way to name a car!

Yeah, we could include the Germans/French too, maybe even some Brits want to come over. I’ll post the idea of the Benelux/Europpo meet in a while, because I too am busy with my finals in a few weeks, and my bachelor thesis at the moment.

Thats because the 3rd gen MR2 was never sold in Canada.

Allright, I’ll keep an eye out for it. Would be cool if we can line it up with a race weekend at Spa or the Nürburgring.

Good luck with the finals and thesis!

I’d like to know how practical it is. I’ve an SW20 and it’s just practical to allow daily driving and roadtrip holidays. I suspect the later car isn’t as easy to live with, is that true?

I’m not sure about the luggage space in an SW20, but it’s rather limited in the ZZW30. I’ve got bins behind the seats and a compartment in the nose (that currently houses the spare wheel, but I’m planning on ditching that and putting in a tire repair kit). The amount of space is probably plenty for a week away with two if you pack smartly, but the shape is the limiting factor. My initial packing plan is two small-medium sport bags behind the seats and two backpacks in the frunk.

I see. It sounds adequate. The SW20 has not much room behind the seats, but it does have a proper boot at the very rear of the car.

Adequate indeed, but now that I can compare, the ZZW30 is seriously tiny compared to the SW20. I think you might be able to store a full SW20 boot in a ZZW30, but you’ll have to spread it across the seat bins, frunk and glove boxes.
